Beauty Fun Facts!

1. You are destroying your prettier side!

What? I am…. no….!!!! Yes it is true – studies from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and elsewhere have shown your left side of the face is prettier than your right side. Darn that right side! And… assuming you are a driver and not wearing sunblock every day… need I say more? It doesn’t matter if you are male or female – everyone loves your left side more.

Time for a free facial analysis! We can show you how to avoid looking like your grandmother!

2. Makeup can help

A study in 1991 showed female politicians with professional makeup artists and photographers were 30% more likely to win people’s votes. Beautiful eyebrows, a winning smile, and certain blouse colors sometimes made a difference in election results.

3. Kitchen based beauty treatments existed in the middle ages

Mayonnaise hair masks and coffee ground scrubs are recent, but women have used kitchen ingredients in their beauty treatments for hundreds of years. The ladies of the middle ages used curdled milk to treat acne, boiled nettles as a toner and cucumber juice to fade freckles.

4. Pores can hold dirt and oil for 20 years.

No wonder almost everyone who doesn’t treat their pores have clogged pores!

5. Radioactive makeup anyone?

Believe it or not, back in the 1930s, radioactive beauty products were quite popular. There was a brand called Tho-Radia that sold a range of products, including lipstick, face powder and perfume that contained radioactive radium and thorium chloride. There were also several brands of toothpaste that proudly advertised the fact that they contained radioactive substances.

6. Women like competition

Women generally are more attracted to men who attract the attention of other women. British psychologist Benedict Jones found women find a man more attractive when he is being smiled at by other women. What your friends think about your man has a big impact on what you think about him too.

7. Lipstick was essential in World War II

Even though all makeup was scarce, female nurses in the Second World War always wore red lipstick because it was believed to have a calming effect on injured soldiers.

8. Nail polish has been around for thousands of years.

The first nail polish was invented in China in 3000 BC, consisting of beeswax, gum, egg whites and colored powder.

9. Wait, do I like Chanel or not?

Chanel No 5 perfume got its name because Coco Chanel preferred the fifth sample that perfumer Ernest Beaux developed for her. Coco (Gabrielle Bonheur) Chanel has been credited with helping women escape the “corseted silhouette”, but it has also been revealed recently she sold out her French people as a Nazi spy. She sure could sew though!
