About IPL

If you struggle with how your facial skin looks because of fine lines, sun damage, or dark spots, Forever Slender MedSpa can offer you a skin analysis at our Norton, MA and Wayland, MA offices to see if you qualify for intense pulsed light therapy (IPL). An IPL photofacial with Laser Genesis technology is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adult men and women with hyperpigmentation and wrinkle issues on their face and neck.

IPL is not be an invasive procedure, but it can be very effective and produce great results. During this procedure, a member of our team sends intense wavelengths of light that heat the skin just enough to ignite the natural regeneration process and boost collagen production. Over time, you should see a healthier layer with a more even tone and less dark spots.

Ideal Candidates

IPL works deep within the layers of your skin to improve many complexion concerns (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no downtime. Candidates for IPL at Forever Slender MedSpa may have a combination of concerns with their skin, including sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), wrinkles, rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, melasma, age and sun spots, or broken capillaries. One of our aestheticians will assess your skin to see if you are a candidate for IPL at your private consultation.

Procedure Technique

IPL is performed inside our Norton, MA and Wayland, MA office in about 20 – 30 minutes in our minor procedures room if performed alone. To start the procedure, the technician will clean and dry the skin to be treated before covering your eyes with special laser shields.

The IPL is administered using a handheld device that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of laser energy. While most patients will feel some discomfort during the IPL, it is generally tolerable for the short treatment time.

What to Expect

There is no downtime associated with an IPL, but you will leave your appointment with your skin a little pink and swollen. This will decrease on its own as the day continues — it can be concealed with makeup if you want. Forever Slender MedSpa advises patients to keep an ointment on the skin's surface to decrease irritation and speed healing. It also helps to take an anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce swelling.

Over the course of several days, the sun damage and other irregularities that rested under the skin will come to the surface and then begin to flake off. It's very important to keep your skin protected from the sun at all times after an IPL and to not pick at your skin. While you should see some visible results after the first session, your skin will attain the best results after several IPL sessions. Our team recommends approximately 3 – 6 treatments performed around once a month at Forever Slender MedSpa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IPL cost?
The cost of your IPL treatment will be determined by assessing your skin's current condition and your aesthetic goals. During your consultation we will discuss these things and determine an estimated cost for your treatment.

How quickly will I see results from IPL?
Improvements will be seen after each IPL treatment, but optimal results will be observed approximately a month after a full series of treatments is completed. You can expect to respond differently to each treatment session as many patients report better results after each treatment. Patients will see a gradual improvement of redness, blemishes, blotchiness, and age spots over time.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Patients typically experience very mild side effects such as minor swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These symptoms almost always subside within a day or two following treatment. While your IPL session will not make your skin sensitive to the sun, you should keep in mind that excess sun is never healthy. Our team highly recommends the use of sunscreen anytime you will be exposed to the sun, especially between IPL treatment sessions.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
Yes. Patients who are about to receive IPL laser treatment are asked to avoid self-tanners and sun exposure for up to a month prior to their treatment. Patients should also discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova in the days prior to treatment. Our team will sometimes ask patients to take anti-inflammatory medications for a week before their procedure to help prevent bruising.

Why so many sessions?
As patients achieve different and better results after each treatment, a full series of IPL sessions is recommended in order to provide gradual, lasting improvement.
