Face Maskne

Are you one of the many people out there wearing a face mask as part of their nursing or other jobs or simply to prevent flu and COVID-19 spread? If so, have you noticed your skin breaking out? Unfortunately wearing the mask can cause breakouts and skin irritations.

Fortunately there are steps you can take to at reduce negative effects from wearing those critical masks.

What has happened to you is acne mechanica, caused by the mechanical rubbing of the mask on your face, adding extra heat and friction. Trapped moisture and oil on the skin’s surface along with the mask rubbing can cause irritation and the formation of white heads.

How to Treat and Prevent Maskne

Cleanse, cleanse, and cleanse, to avoid trapping bacteria under the mask and pushing bacteria further into your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of natural oils and to keep your natural skin barrier intact.

For the time you are going to need the mask, temporarily avoid toners which strip your face and incorporate a good moisturizer into your skincare regime instead. Those moisturizers will add to your natural barriers.

When pores become clogged with dirt and oils, it’s important to clean out those pores to prevent acne. Use chemical exfoliants containing salicylic acid for deep pore penetration rather than harsh scrubs which irritate compromised skin. Exfoliating will prevent further breakouts and speed up recovery time.

Also minimize makeup since thick concealers and foundations trap bacteria in pores. Swap out thick foundations and concealers for lighter, non-comedogenic formulas. Makeup plus sweat, and a mask will trap bacteria in your pores and cause irritation.

Preparing your skin before putting on that mask is essential, but also take care of your skin once you take the mask off too! Cleanse your skin again after wearing a mask since your irritated skin is more prone to breakouts. Wash your face immediately after removing your mask. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing as irritated skin is also more vulnerable to acne-causing bacteria and breakouts.

Importance of a Good Consultation

You should always get a proper consultation with a trained professional to learn more how your treatments work, the results you can expect and the potential side effects you may endure.

A proper consultation will allow you to help determine how many sessions you will need and how well procedures will work on your given skin type.
