Learn Why Choosing the Right Sunscreen Can Save Your Skin – or Not!

Chemical Sunscreens vs. Mineral Based Sunscreens

While both chemical based and mineral based sunscreens will protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays, they accomplish protection through differing mechanisms.

Chemical sunscreen absorbs into the skin and then absorbs UV rays, converts the rays into heat, and releases them from the body.

Mineral (physical) sun blocks stay at the skin’s surface and reflect the sun's rays away. Mineral sunscreen provides protection against the full spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Physical sunscreens with both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide protect against UVA, the wavelength that penetrates clouds and glass and causes significant photo-aging in the form of wrinkles and sunspots.

What Lasts Longer - Chemical or Physical Sunblock?

Mineral sunscreens tend to protect longer than chemical versions since the chemicals break down when they deflect UV rays. Zinc oxide particle breakdown is slower than chemical UV filter breakdown since the mineral sunblock is a physical block instead of causing a chemical conversion, so you get more protection time from zinc oxide products compared to chemical based versions.

How Much SunScreen Do I Need to Apply?

You should apply approximately one teaspoon of sunblock onto your face and two teaspoons of sunblock onto your body.

Do I Really Need to Reapply Sunscreen Every Two Hours?

Yes – especially when you are sweating or swimming. Even if you work indoors, you still should wear sunblock and occasionally reapply. Wearing the right amount of sunblock could be the difference between great skin or poor skin smoothness and texture. If you are careful with your skin protection, it might even prevent cancer.

Chemical Sunscreen Dangers

Experts are concerned oxybenzone may be absorbed through the skin, leading to skin irritation, hormonal disruption — even skin cancer. Oxybenzone is the primary functional chemical in chemical-based sunscreens. Potential issues include endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, contact allergies, and photo allergies. In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration called for more research on oxybenzone safety and effectiveness.
