Microneedling

Looking to improve the look of scars, boost collagen, or encourage hair growth? Microneedling is a minimally invasive solution around since 1995, but which has gained significant traction in recent years thanks to new technology.

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates microscopic punctures in the skin. It is a nonsurgical treatment which tightens and rejuvenates your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein which keeps your skin supple, smooth, and tight. Over time, your natural collagen stores are depleted and your skin becomes thin and loses elasticity. The micro-injuries created through microneedling prompt your skin to increase collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, your skin will appear brighter, firmer, and healthier.

Microneedling is most often used on your face to target:

• Acne scars
• Age spots (also called “sun spots”)
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Large pores
• Other types of scars
• Reduced skin elasticity
• Uneven skin tone

Even though microneedling is primarily used on the face, at Forever Slender MedSpa, we sometimes use it to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body. A recent study found microneedling effective for stretch marks on the thighs and abdominal area when combined with fillers. Scarring on other body parts may also be treated with this procedure.

Microneedling is the insertion of very fine short needles into the skin for rejuvenation. The most popular (and cost effective) microneedling device, known as a dermaroller, is made up of micro-fine needles that range in diameter from 0.5 and 2.5 millimeters. If the prospect of multiple needle wounds sounds slightly ominous to you, know that the punctures are more like pin-pricks that enter only surface-level deep.

Microneedling is often combined with other treatments since channels are created in your skin that make it easier for treatments to penetrate the deeper layers like vitamin-rich serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling with PRP has become known as the vampire facial. During your consultation, we can discuss what treatments may be performed along with microneedling and which would most benefit your skin.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most patients get 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to achieve their best results. However, the number of treatments you need will depend on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your consultation, we will be able to estimate how many treatments you will need based on your skin and goals. Once you have reached your goal, our team recommends scheduling maintenance treatments every six months.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
For the most part, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are very few side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin, including the face, neck, arms, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have used Accutane within the last 2 – 3 months, as well as if you have an active skin infection, open wound, or herpes simplex. In addition, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation treatments.

Skin Analysis
