Surprising Facts About Coconut Oil

While you have probably seen articles out there telling you to switch to Coconut Oil, Forever Slender would highly recommend that you don’t do it! In fact, coconut oil is one of the very worst oils you can consume!  

There is a reason why coconut oil is not a liquid at room temperature - unlike almost all oils commonly consumed.  Coconut oil is approximately 80% saturated fat, the same fat commonly found in animal fats which are also solid at room temperature. 

Saturated fats and trans fats are the most important fats to avoid for long term heart health. Of all the fat within coconut oil, over 90% is saturated fat, the fat that increases LDL cholesterol.  Lauric acid, one of the saturated fats found in coconut oil, behaves like a long-chain triglyceride, making it unusually bad since they raise those LDL. 

By contrast, these oils have 10% or less of the fats contained within them saturated fat (in order least to most):

  • Safflower
  • Canola
  • Flaxseed
  • Walnut
  • Grapeseed
  • Sunflower

These oils have a fat content of 10-20% saturated fat of all the fat contained within them (in order least to most):

  • Avocado
  • Corn
  • Olive
  • Sesame
  • Soybean
  • Peanut

Stick with the liquid oils for best heart health. Coconut oil’s “superfood” status is not backed up by real data.  Similarly, the same high saturated fat content issue is present in Palm Oil fats – both Red Palm and Kernel.  Avoid these too!  Stick with the other oils listed above which contain 80%+ mono and polyunsaturated fats.
