Who Are the Most Vulnerable People to Covid Infection?
There has been a wide disparity in “Who gets infected” versus “Who dies from covid infection.” The majority of reported covid infections are to people under 50 years old but 59% of covid deaths in the United States were people over 75 years old. While some studies have shown similar numbers of deaths among men and women, those studies have not accounted for the fact there are more older women than men. When age is added as a study consideration, a covid infected man of any age is more than twice as likely to die than a comparably aged woman.
We also know heavy people are more vulnerable to covid as well. Obesity is known to triple the risk of hospitalization for those infected for many reasons, including the likelihood of other complications, diminished immune system function, etc.
How Well Do Vaccines Work for Overweight People?
A recent study in Rome conducted by Dr Aldo Venuti, of the Istituti Fisioterapici Ospitalieri examined the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech covid vaccine and concluded while everyone has tremendous protection gains with the vaccine, obese individuals gain less protection than thinner people. The reduced protection is primarily due to reduced immune response leading to half the antibodies produced by thinner individuals.
