Major Causes of Elderly Falls

There are many reasons why a person can become a fall risk. Sometimes the issues are problems with muscles or other physical problems but sometimes people can be negatively affected by medications. Let’s first examine the medication caused issues.

Medications Potentially Causing Falls

Medicines can be crucial for treating ongoing issues and frequently are required to simply sustain and extend our lives when we are dealing with a significant medical concern. These could be smaller concerns or major ones like cancer, diabetes, heart disease or other problems.

Medications generally also come with side effects, including:

  •  Drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Low blood pressure

Potentially Fall, Problematic Psychoactive Medicinal Classes

  • Anticonvulsants
  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotics
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Opioids
  • Sedatives

Prescription and OTC Drugs to Monitor for Drowsiness, Dizziness, Etc.

  • Anticholinergics
  • Antihistamines
  • Blood Pressure Meds
  • Muscle Relaxants

Other Things to Monitor to Keep Senior’s Safe

  • Have they fallen before? How often?
  • Are they looking or feeling unsteady?
  • Can they stand up from a chair, walk 10 feet and turn around and come back in less than 12 seconds?
  • • Can they see well? Eye problems sometimes develop slowly enough the individual may not realize they have a problem (glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, cataracts, etc.) If not, they might not notice cords or small items on the ground.
  • Are they wearing their footwear correctly? A lack of flexibility can cause poor wearing of footwear, increasing the probability of tripping.

Poor Core Muscle Strength

We all know aging slowly robs our bodies of muscular strength. For much of our lives, we have enough residual strength to continue to perform our daily functions without any problem. Unfortunately, when we reach advanced ages that residual strength has sometimes diminished to levels where we can no longer take care of ourselves effectively. It is crucial to perform activities to keep muscle strength as long as possible and strong as possible.

At Forever Slender MedSpa, we are the #1 Medical Spa in Massachusetts for good reason – we can and deliver results to our patients. We have mastered CoolTone, a fantastic muscle building service which has applications for people of many ages and abilities – sports stars to the elderly.

For our older population, maintaining core muscle strength can be the difference both in injury avoidance and also providing a stronger baseline for when and if an injury occurs which requires recovery. Lacking core muscle strength can literally cause otherwise healthy people to lose the ability to live within their own homes. We adjust the settings of the CoolTone device to match the needs and abilities of the person using it to allow muscle building to safely occur.

CoolTone sessions are 30 minutes and for a successful muscle building regimen to occur we will work with you to set up a series of sessions.
